How to Care for Your Swimwear: Tips for Longevity and Freshness

by Ryan Darlington 18 Jan 2025

Swimwear is an investment in comfort, style, and confidence, so it’s important to keep it looking fresh and fabulous for as long as possible. From chlorine to saltwater, the elements can take a toll on your swimsuits, but with the right care, your swimwear can last season after season. Here’s your ultimate guide to caring for your swimwear:

1. Hand Wash, Don’t Machine Wash

While it may be tempting to toss your swimsuit into the washing machine, hand washing is always the best option. Gently wash your swimwear in lukewarm water with a mild detergent. Avoid using bleach or fabric softeners, as they can damage the fabric and elasticity. Simply rinse the suit after every swim, and wash it thoroughly every few wears.

2. Avoid Chlorine and Saltwater Damage

Chlorine and saltwater can break down fabric and cause fading. After each swim, rinse your suit with fresh water to remove chlorine or salt from the fabric. If you’re spending a lot of time in the pool or ocean, this small step can help maintain the integrity of the fabric.

3. Dry Gently – Never in Direct Sunlight

After washing your swimwear, lay it flat on a clean towel to air dry. Never wring out your swimsuit, as this can stretch and distort the fabric. Avoid hanging it by the straps as this can also stretch them out. Most importantly, don’t leave your suit out in direct sunlight for extended periods, as UV rays can cause fading and weakening of the fibers.

4. Store Properly

When storing your swimsuit off-season, make sure it's completely dry. Avoid cramming it into a drawer or bag, as it could lose its shape. Instead, fold it neatly and store it in a cool, dry place. A fabric bag or a drawer lined with tissue paper works great to preserve its shape and elasticity.

5. Rotate Your Swimsuits

If you have multiple swimsuits, rotate them throughout the season. Giving your swimwear a break between wears helps maintain its elasticity and overall condition. Plus, rotating will help prevent overuse of a single piece and ensure each suit stays in top form.

With these simple tips, you can extend the life of your favorite swimsuits, keeping them looking beautiful and feeling comfortable all season long!
